Athabascan
Indian Fish camp
|
The
fish camp is the summer home for Interior Athabascan Indians who practice a
subsistence lifestyle. It is at the fish camp that they catch fish to feed their
dogs and themselves throughout the winter. Fish camp is also where the family
elders worked side by side with the younger generations, passing down their
history and culture, preserving their heritage.

Experience
a traditional Athabascan Indian fish camp. The fish are caught in a
fishwheel, a which scoops the fish from the river, as it is turned by the
current. Watch a demonstration by Dixie Alexander of how the fish are cut and
prepared for human and dog consumption. Dixie will also be at the Old Chena
Village giving Athabascan hide and beadwork demonstrations, another of the
Interior Indians' most prized cultural skills.
