Ship Creek
|
So named as occasionally the
sandbar drops to reveal a wreck, believed to be part of the 2,600-ton
clipper Schomberg, which was lost when it went ashore off the Victorian
coast in 1855 on its maiden voyage. Cynics suggest that her captain had run
the vessel ashore deliberately - it was insured for £300,000 - as he had
failed to make good his widely publicised boast of making the
Liverpool-to-Melbourne voyage in 60 days 'with or without the help of God'.
In the event the sandbar on which the sailing ship perished proved to have
been uncharted. A short distance from the highway the sandy beach, backed by
coastal forest, is pleasant for walking. |
