Port Craig
Near the western extremity of Te Waewae Bay once stood one of the largest timbermills in the hemisphere. Timber was shipped out from a settlement that boasted dozens of huts, with reticulated water and electricity. Today there is comparatively little to mark the site of a once-busy community, for after output had reached a peak in 1928 the venture failed with the Depression. All that remains is a deserted schoolhouse (now a trampers' hut) and traces of both the mill and the wharf. There is good crayfishing hereabouts. Port Craig is an all-day walk (return) around the foreshore.
