Falls

An easy path through predominantly beech forest leads to the head of the falls, which cascade over a series of broad terraces. Steps continue down to the foot of the falls where the best view is from a platform over the stream. These valleys were localities for wonderful stories, as Tuckett related in 1844: 'They say the eels ascend the falls unitedly in a train, intertwining with each other, when the Maoris catch them in great numbers.'17 km.
The falls are best photographed at about 11 a.m. on a sunny day. A trip to the falls may be readily combined with visits to Jacks Bay and the blowhole.
