The most fascinating feature of this compelling coastline is a series of
remarkable interlocking sea caves, between 30 and 50 metres in height,
some cut back into the cliffs for over 100 metres. They were named by Dr
Hocken's group in 1892, "as being appropriate from their ^-shaped
roofs and their reverberating qualities". Dr Hocken recorded
"full test being made by whistling, singing, and coo-eeing".

Coal seams may be seen in the cave entrances. The caves can be visited
only from one hour before low tide to one hour after. Care must be taken
at all times, as the occasional freak wave has drenched more than one
visiting group. 38 km. On Waipati Beach. Turnoff signposted at 36 km SW of
Owaka on Highway 92. Tide times are usually posted at the start of the
access road. 20 mins walk down a steep track from the end of the access
road. A powerful torch is essential if one is to venture any distance into
the system.
