Ferrymead Park
|
A highly successful museum
project involving some 20 different groups is creating a pre-1920 "working
township", augmented by special interest displays. Early train, tramway and
trolley-bus systems carry visitors over the 44-hectare site with its 60
buildings. Special Halls include fire services, rural history, transport,
science and mechanical musical instruments. There are a working printing
works and a bakery. |

The Ferrymead locale is itself of historic import, as it was from here to
Christchurch that the country's first steam railway ran, serving vessels
that docked in the estuary from 1863 until the line fell into disuse with
the opening of the tunnel through to Lyttelton in 1867. Bridle Path Rd,
Heathcote, off road to Sumner. |
