Nature has spent millions of
years creating this "cathedral". The Troll Church is a System of caves that
has several entrances and side passages. Carved out by water flowing through
the mountain, it is constantly changing as water and frost dose some
passageways and open others. |

These days The Troll Church
consists of three caves that lead into a strange and magical world. One
hundred years ago there were four caves, however one of them has now
collapsed. Several narrow crevices in the mountain lead into wide, open
chambers, however visitors are advised against exploring these because of
the danger of becoming trapped. Legend has it that a dog that once found its
way into the cave exited on the other side of the mountain. |

The area above The Troll Church
is also well worth a visit owing to its glorious lakes where you can pitch
your tent. The Troll peaks (Trolltindene) offer spectacular mountain angling
-a truly unforgettable experience of untamed countryside and fairytale views
awaits you. |
The Grotto
You are now Standing at the
entrance to the main cave. Measuring 70 metres in length, it is Southern
Norway's long-est cave. The Grotto passage is 2-3 metres wide and 1.5 metres
in height at its Iowest point. In some places you will see tower-like rooms
that are 6-7 metres high. One of the most impres-sive parts of The Troll
Church, Ihe Altarpiece", can be found at the far end of the grotto - a
marble vault with a 14-metre high waterfall flooded in light. |

A little further on, a ladder
leads down to The Troll Church's centrepiece, the seconcTcave, where the
ceiling and walls are adorned with white marble.
Daylight pours in and a waterfall casca-des down from a fissure at the far
end of the vault - a magnificent sight that is not to be missed.
The third cave can often be hard to find, as it is accessed through a hole
in the ground on a ledge. Early in the season the entrance may be filled
with snow. Only a few years ago there were two entrances, however one has
now collapsed. There is not enough room to stand in most of the uppermost
cave, however it has long passage-ways leading out to the sides. |
