Ergan Kystfort

Establishment

The German occupational forces established themselves in Bud and Ergan
in early May 1940. The planning of the fort was made in a relatively short
time and was not changed later. The German navy and army were responsible
for the work.

Placing the artillery

In April 1941 the "Heeresküstenartillerieabteilung 486 " with its independent
war batteries were established in Berlin. One of these batteries "Heeresküsten-
batterie 996" with its 4 guns was assigned to Bud.

Development

The building of the fort started late spring 1941, whereas the construction of
the tunnels, bunkers and Stands started somewhat later. The commando head-
quarters and Operation room were mined out in rick. The development of the
site ceased in April 1943.

Maintainance and repairs

Repairs to the fort continued until the end of W. W.U. The fort had by then
become part of a comprehensive defence System, running form Petsamo in
northern Finland (which today is Russia), to the coast of Spain. Hitler called
this defence line the " Atlantic Wall" in his Propaganda.

Dismantline

From May to November 1945 the fort was dismantled. The weapons and the
ammunition were dumped into the sea, and the barracs, including the furniture,
were sold.
