Picture 1: BARKTRAYS
Every year the seine was impregnated in big trays. It was immersed into
water together with small pieces of birchbark. The bark contains materials
that protect against rotting, and gives the seine a dark brown colour.
Picture 2: FOUR-OARED BOAT FROM
NORDFJORD ca. 1820
By the coast, where the weather conditions were rougher, the use of boats
from Nordfjord was very common. These boats were said to be more seaworthy
than the boats from Sogn, and they were used both for travelling and small
fishing. The half-room amidships were used for ballast on the way out to the
fishing grounds and for the catch on the way home. This boat is rigged with
an asymmetrical Square sail.
Picture 5: SVEIN HENJENSAND'S
BOATYARD
Svem Henjesand from Sogndal, is the last one to build Sogneboats in the
traditional way handed down to him from his father and grandfather. In order
to demonstrate techniques, he has started building a four-oared boat for
this museum. |
